The Project

Overview

A major energy company engaged BD Emerson to unify operational, maintenance, and market data into one governed platform. The client's identity is withheld under our confidentiality obligations, and the outcomes described are qualitative for the same reason.

BD Emerson x

Operational Data Platform for a Major Energy Company

The client and the problem

A major energy company managed its assets through systems that had never been asked to agree with each other: field telemetry in one estate, maintenance history in another, market and settlement data in a third. Every reliability question became a data reconciliation project first, and by the time the answer arrived, the window to act on it cheaply had often closed.

What we built

BD Emerson designed and delivered an operational data platform that reconciles those estates into one governed environment. The work began as a data strategy engagement, settling inventory, ownership, and platform direction before a pipeline was written, and then moved into build. Ingestion pipelines standardized field, maintenance, and market data with lineage and access controls in place from the first source onward, because in a regulated industry a dataset that cannot show where it came from is a liability wearing a dashboard.

How the work ran

Delivery ran in increments tied to operating questions the business already wanted answered, asset availability first, so the platform proved itself on real decisions rather than architecture reviews. The client's engineers worked inside the build from the first increment, and the runbooks, lineage documentation, and access model were handed over as working artifacts rather than appendices.

The value delivered

Operations, maintenance, and commercial teams now pull from the same governed data rather than reconciling exports, and disagreements about whose number is right have largely left the room. Reliability conversations moved upstream, because the people who can prevent a problem see it while prevention is still the cheap option. Compliance and audit teams work from lineage the platform maintains for them. The estate is owned and extended by the client's own team, which was a design goal rather than an accident.

Why the client is not named

Our confidentiality obligations do not allow us to name this client or publish operating figures. The approach travels: it is the same one behind our data strategy and data engineering practices, and we are glad to talk through the specifics under NDA.
