Overview

A major hospital system engaged BD Emerson to implement Palantir Foundry for daily operations. The client's identity is withheld under our confidentiality obligations, and the outcomes described here are qualitative for the same reason.

Palantir Foundry Implementation for a Major Hospital System

The client and the problem

A major hospital system licensed Palantir Foundry with a clear ambition: run capacity, staffing, and patient flow from one operational picture instead of the nightly reports each department assembled for itself. The license existed. The working deployment did not. Data sat across the electronic health record, scheduling, staffing, and finance systems, each with its own definitions of the same beds, units, and patients.

What we built

BD Emerson implemented Foundry around an ontology that mirrors how the hospital actually runs: beds, units, staff, patients, and the events that move them. Pipelines reconciled source systems into that object model with lineage preserved, so every number on an operational dashboard traces back to the system that produced it. On top of the ontology we built the workflows operations leaders asked for, starting with bed capacity and throughput, and shaped the tools around how charge nurses and house supervisors already work rather than asking clinicians to learn an analyst's interface.

How the work ran

The team paired platform engineers with people who have sat in hospital operations meetings, because the hard part of hospital data is the operational meaning behind it. Governance ran through the build: access follows role, protected health information stays within the controls the compliance team approved, and audit evidence accumulates as the platform runs. Knowledge transfer was a deliverable, with the client's analysts building on the ontology themselves before the engagement closed.

The value delivered

Daily operating decisions now start from a shared, current picture rather than competing spreadsheets. Capacity conversations reference the same numbers on every floor. New use cases land quickly because the ontology already speaks the hospital's language, which is the difference between a platform and a project. And the deployment stands on governance the client's own compliance team can defend.

Why the client is not named

Healthcare confidentiality is not a marketing preference, it is an obligation, so this client is not named and no operational metrics are published. The approach is the one we bring to every Palantir Foundry implementation, and our Palantir consulting practice page explains the engagement models by name.
