Overview

A major fintech business engaged BD Emerson to redesign and modernize the core platform its products run on. The client's identity is withheld under our confidentiality obligations, and every claim here is qualitative for the same reason.

BD Emerson x

Core Platform Modernization for a Major Fintech Business

The client and the problem

A major fintech business ran its products on a platform built years earlier for a smaller company. New features took longer each quarter because every change touched fragile code, batch jobs collided with real-time demands, and the compliance team spent audit season reconstructing how data moved. Leadership had a build vs buy decision to make and no appetite for a rewrite that would stall the roadmap.

What we built

BD Emerson ran the technology redesign end to end. The engagement started with an architecture and dependency assessment that mapped which components carried revenue and which carried only history. From that map we sequenced a phased modernization: the highest-risk services were refactored and moved first behind stable interfaces, commodity functions were replaced with managed services rather than rebuilt, and the pieces that differentiated the business were rebuilt as services the client's own engineers now extend. Security did not arrive at the end. Access controls, logging, and evidence capture were designed into the new stack and mapped to the frameworks the client attests against, so the compliance posture improved with each phase rather than after the last one.

How the work ran

The delivery team stayed senior and small, working alongside the client's engineers rather than around them. Each phase ended with the client's team operating what was built, with runbooks and documentation in hand. Cutovers were rehearsed, reversible, and scheduled around the business calendar, because a modernization that interrupts revenue is a failure regardless of the architecture.

The value delivered

The client now ships product changes without scheduling around the legacy core, and the batch-window constraints that shaped the old roadmap are gone. Product, payments, and risk teams work from one governed data model instead of reconciling extracts. Audit preparation draws on evidence the platform produces as it runs. And the engineering organization owns the result: the knowledge to operate and extend the platform stayed in house when the engagement ended.

Why the client is not named

Our engagement terms and our confidentiality obligations do not allow us to name this client or publish their metrics, and we would rather stay quiet than approximate. The pattern, the sequencing, and the tradeoffs are exactly what we bring to application modernization and technology consulting engagements, and we are glad to walk through the specifics live under NDA.
