What Is Palantir Foundry? Architecture, Ontology, and Use Cases

Palantir Foundry is an operating platform for enterprise data. It connects the systems a business already runs, turns their output into governed datasets, models the business as an ontology of objects and actions, and serves applications that operators use to make decisions. That last part separates it from most data platforms. Foundry is built to run operations, where most platforms stop at analyzing them.

The architecture, layer by layer

The bottom layer is connection. Foundry ships with connectors for ERPs, CRMs, warehouses, files, streams, and APIs, landing raw data with lineage attached from the first sync.

Above that sit pipelines. Transformations written in SQL, Python, or Java turn raw tables into clean, versioned datasets with health checks and data expectations built in. Every output traces back to its inputs, which matters later when an auditor or an executive asks where a number came from.

The middle layer is the ontology, and it is the reason Foundry behaves differently from a lakehouse. The top layer is delivery: Workshop applications, dashboards, and write-back workflows for human operators, and AIP for AI agents working the same ontology under the same permissions.

The ontology, Foundry's center of gravity

Most platforms stop at tables. Foundry maps tables into business objects: a customer, a shipment, a production line, a security control. Objects carry properties, link to each other, and expose actions, the governed operations a user or agent may take, like reassigning an order or flagging an exception.

The payoff is reuse. Once the ontology models your operation, every new application, analysis, and AI agent works from the same semantic layer instead of rebuilding its own copy of the business. The cost is that ontology decisions compound, in both directions. Model it well and each use case ships faster than the last. Rush it and every workaround becomes permanent. What Foundry gets used for

The recurring patterns: supply chain control towers that see across plants, carriers, and inventory. Production and yield optimization in manufacturing. Risk, compliance, and audit operations that need lineage as much as data. Customer operations that unify billing, support, and usage. And increasingly, the data foundation under enterprise AI programs.

The common thread is operational decisions that depend on many systems at once. Where one report from one warehouse answers the question, Foundry is more platform than the problem needs, and we say so.

Foundry and AIP

AIP is Palantir's AI layer, and it stands on the ontology. Agents retrieve enterprise context through permission-aware queries and act through the same governed action types human operators use. Foundry without AIP is still a complete platform. AIP without Foundry has nothing solid to stand on. What an implementation involves

A realistic first arc runs six to twelve weeks: one operational use case, the data connections it needs, a deliberately scoped ontology, and an application real operators adopt. Security configuration, markings, purpose-based access, and audit setup belong in that first arc, not after it.

The delivery model matters as much as the platform. Forward deployed engineers build in your environment against your data, which compresses discovery and transfers capability as it goes.
